December's Contractors of the Month
Jack & Retia Spear Lend a Helping Hand
Jack and Retia Spear, owner operator team of 11 years, were quick to offer their help when they learned that a fellow Mercer contractor had become badly injured and unable to deliver his load.
Last month, Joe Wilshire had fallen from his trailer while securing a load in Duson, LA. He fell backward onto the asphalt and extended his arm to break his fall. He broke his wrist and was rendered unable to deliver his load to its destination in Louisville. Wilshire notified his coordinator and a message for help spread throughout Mercer's communication network. Jack and Retia, who were loading in Belchase, LA, saw the message and drove 200 miles out of their way to come to Wilshire's aid.
The Spears were determined to deliver Wilshire's load (along with their own) on time. The team split up--Jack hopped in Wilshire's truck to deliver the freight to Louisville on schedule, while Retia stayed the course with their load, set to deliver in OH. Wilshire accompanied Jack in the passenger seat. Both loads were delivered on time.
"The Spears really helped me out. They looked after me, made sure I ate and got a shower along the way. They even bought me pain medicine, " says Wilshire. "I offered compensation for their kindness, but they refused."
According to Jack Spear, they had previously met Wilshire on two occasions hauling on the West Coast. "200 miles out of the way- well, that ain't nothing when it comes to helping a friend," Spear says. "To us, it was no big deal. We have no problem helping out someone if they are really in need."
