February's Contractors of the Month

Chuck Shaffer, Larry & Candy Burkhardt
Chuck Shaffer and Larry and Candy Burkhardt were nominated as this month’s contractors of the month for helping fellow Mercer owner operator and friend, John Lemon, get back on his feet after he was involved in a major accident.

Last month in Casper, Wyoming, Lemon was on his way to deliver a load, when his truck was caught by heavy winds and he hit a patch of ice on the road. Lemon lost control and swerved off of the road, causing his truck and trailer to flip over into the ditch. Lemon was taken to the nearest hospital by ambulance, suffering from minor injuries.

Chuck Shaffer was heading toward Casper when he heard of Lemon’s accident. He was planning on passing through Casper to visit his friends, Larry and Candy Burkhardt. When he heard the news, he contacted Mercer’s safety and claim department to report the accident and drove the remaining 110 miles to Casper. Candy Burkhardt met Chuck at the hospital to check on their friend. Then, the two left to the scene of the accident to retrieve John’s belongings from the truck, as well as his dog, Booger, who had been taken to the local pound.

Lemon, Shaffer, and the Burkhardt’s friendship stretches back to when the trio worked together as company drivers for Davis Transport. Chuck says, “I’ve known John for nearly 20 years. If I were in the same situation, John would have done the same for me.”

While recovering from his injuries, John and his dog were invited to stay at the Burkhardt’s home until he was able to get back on the road. “We’ll help with anything that needs to be done. And we just love the dog,” Candy says, “I told John he could go back on the road, but he’s got to leave Booger with us!”

John Lemon is recovering quickly and hopes to get back on the road soon. He is grateful for the amazing friendships he has gained in his career, and claims that the close-knit family atmosphere at Mercer makes it one of the best companies in the industry. “ I’ve been with Mercer for three years and it has just been fantastic. It’s the best move I’ve ever made.”
