Get to Know Dennis Baughn
Mercer's Mouth in the South
For ten years, Dennis Baughn has been traveling throughout the South, making friends, livening up truck stops and recruiting a few trucks along the way. For the sake of getting to know him better, Dennis agreed to answer a few of our thought provoking and/or silly questions.
Q: Dennis, how did you get your start at Mercer?
A: I'd been driving a truck since 1974, until I became an agent for Mercer in '93. I wasn't good at being an agent, but I had always wanted to be in recruiting. I became a field recruiter in '97 and I think I am a better asset to the company this way. As a recruiter, telling the truth is key ... making sure they have the proper information. Also you've got to make friends and get to know our truck drivers.
Q: Now, down to business. Who is more attractive, Dale Earnhardt or yourself? Be honest.
A: (laughs) Well, I guess I'd have to say myself. The girl in South Carolina said Dennis! This girl saw my picture on an ad on the DAT board, called my number on the screen and told me I looked just like - no, even better that Dale Earnhardt.
Q: Who would win in a foot race; Bear Bryant or Tom Landry?
A: Neither- They're both dead! But really, I guess I'd have to go with my boy Bear. Duh-uh!
Q: If you were trapped on a desert island, and you could bring one item, what would it be?
A: Subway sandwiches. BMT, baby.
Q: On the topic of “eating fresh,” you seem to be in pretty good shape. What is your routine for staying fit?
A: I try to get in 20 minutes of hard walking, two days a week. This is embarrassing, but I also do 15 push-ups every day. That’s all I can do, but they are real push-ups. Not the ones little girls do.
Q: What are your hobbies/ interests?
A: I like fishing, boating, motorcycles … all sports. I’ve been coaching youth football for 21 years.
Q: What would you do if you weren’t working at Mercer?
A: I’d be selling big trucks, maybe boats or motorcycles.
Q: What is your greatest fear?
A: No fear, baby. It’s a sin to let any kind of fear run your life.
Q: What are you most proud of in your life?
A: My wife and three kids. My wife works at the Mobile (AL) County school board. I have a son and a son-in-law serving in the Army. My daughter is a G8 in the military and my other son is a truck driver.
