In the Headlights: Dean Donnell

Dean Donnell has worked at Mercer for 26 years. When Dean first came to Mercer, he worked as a night shift dispatcher. He worked in Permits briefly and has been in Recruiting most of that time thereafter. Dean is now the Orientation Coordinator .

Q: What do you like the most about working at Mercer?
A: It is family oriented and there is a sense of teamwork when the whole company tries to achieve the same goal.

Q: Being the Orientation Coordinator for Mercer, what is a typical day like for you?
A: Chaotic! I help the guys with all situations they face when leasing on.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests?
A: Reading, history, and sailing. Currently, I am on a racing team through the Louisville Cruising Club. We race on the Ohio River every Wednesday. I am on a team of 4 and I’m good! My ultimate sailing goal is to buy a sailboat and sail across the ocean, eventually circling the world.

Q: What is your favorite music?

A: Blues – Buddy guy, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughn are among my favorite artists.

Q:  Before you worked at Mercer, what were you doing?
A: I was trying to find the right livelihood for my family. I must have had 20 jobs in the 2 years before I cam to Mercer. I was 22 when I moved from South Dakota with my wife and twins to work at Mercer.

Q: Do you have any advice for the new generation of Mercer?
A: A lot of opportunities will come by to draw your attention from your goals. Try not to get distracted, keep your eye on the goal. A lot of people have a come and gone thinking the grass was greener on the other side, and they've realized they've lost out on something pretty special by leaving.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Fried chicken and lots of sweets!

Q: What’s your favorite cartoon character?

A: Mighty Mouse – the most unsuspecting superhero.


Q: What are you most proud of in your life?

A: My kids – twins (boy and girl) and my 16-year-old daughter.
