In the Headlights: Sandra Brown

Sandra Brown is featured this month in the headlights. Among the usual important Sandra facts, she reveals her nickname around Mercer (the queen of what?).

Q: What do you like about Mercer?
A: The clothing we get to wear to work. I also like the friendly people I am surrounded by. Including my colleagues and contractors.

Q: What is your job title and description?
A: I am the Safety & Compliance Drug Testing Administrator. A.K.A. The Pee
Queen. I am responsible for random drug testing. Including contacting the driver to tell him he’s due for a drug test and finding an available facility within a reasonable distance from the driver. I find the locations by looking in my “Location Bible.” I also handle all of the pre-employment drug testing paperwork. The other part of my job is to give out Safety Awards and Years of Service jackets.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests?
A: I like working in my flower garden. Sitting on the front porch when it is quiet is very relaxing. I also love playing with my grandchildren. I have 4 grandchildren that live in Kentucky and 7 more that live in Illinois.

Q: Where were you born and raised?
A: I was born and raised in Louisville, KY. I have lived in Texas, Kansas, and Mississippi.

Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?
A: Marriage is a great accomplishment. Also I am a breast cancer survivor. That is a great accomplishment.

Q: How long have you worked at Mercer?
A: This time it’s been a little over 3 years. The first time I worked at Mercer was back in 1989. I worked the Switchboard, Broker Pay, and in Government. The second time was in ’97 when I worked in Rates and then ran the department. Then I moved to Texas and tested the CASS System, which is the system used now to compile rates for loads.

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: I love ‘em all. But peanut butter cookies top the chart.

Q: Before you came to Mercer, what were you doing?
A: This time before I came back to Mercer, I was working at Farm Depot in
Hattiesburg, MS. I lived in Mississippi because my husband was in the army there.

Q: What’s the coolest thing you have ever done?
A: White water rafting at Nantahala Gorge in North Carolina.

Q: Where is the coolest place you've ever visited?
A: As a kid it was Mammoth Cave. As an adult it was probably Mardi Gras.

Q: Who is your favorite cartoon character?
A: My favorite character of all time was Tweedy Bird. “I tawt a taw a puttie tat.”
Now, as a grandmother though, I watch a lot of Sponge Bob.
