In the Headlights: Shelby Corum

Shelbyithl
Shelby Corum is being featured this month for her role as the Event Coordinator for the Mid America Truck Show Cookout. Shelby is also known in Recruiting as "Shelba".  The name comes from Shelby’s daughter, Mikya. When Mikya was learning to talk, she always called her mom Shelba. Everyone thought it was funny, and it stuck as her nickname. To get to know Shelba a little better she agreed to be interviewed for the March Newsletter.

Q: Shelby, How long have you been with Mercer?  Where have you worked?

A: I have been at Mercer for nearly 5 years. I have worked in the Log Department, the Switchboard, and in Recruiting. I have enjoyed Recruiting the most.

Q: What to do like most about Mercer?

A: Mercer is my family away from my family. I really like that people pull together to get tasks accomplished in a timely manner. Mercer is a family environment and it seems like people at Mercer genuinely care about each other.

Q: In your opinion, what is the most important aspect about recruiting a truck?

A: It’s quality not quantity that matters most. My goal is to recruit the best trucks in the industry. Mercer’s contractors are the best and treat us the best.

Q: What is an ideal day like for you?

A: Well, for me an ideal day is a routine from the time I wake until I go to bed. After waking up and getting ready, I get my daughter up and get her ready for school. I drop her off and head to Mercer. Right after work I pick up my daughter, go home, cook dinner, help my daughter with her homework, we play, and I put her to bed. I wind down myself and prepare for another day.

Q: What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

A: Raspberry or Raspberry Chip.  I don’t care which, as long as it’s raspberry. I love raspberry!

Q: Please explain what your role in MATS is.

A: This year, I am planning the cookout for the Truck Show. I am also making all of the arrangements for lunch on Thursday before the Truck Show. Because I am pregnant, I will probably be covering the phones in the office during some of the show so I can stay off my feet. During the rest of the show, I will be with the two Mercer trucks that I recruited - they are entering the show. Look for me out in the crowd by the Mercer trucks.

Q: What exciting new things are planned for this year’s cookout?

A: This year there will be a casino night. Suppliers from Cincinnati, OH are bringing Black Jack, Poker, Slot Machines, Dice Tables, Roulette Wheels, Dealers, and a “Good” DJ. There will also be an Edy's Ice Cream Stand, so get your ice cream early and avoid the long lines at the Truck Show. This year’s cookout is going to be totally different then last years. It will be laid back and better then last year.

Q: What all goes into planning the MATS Cookout?

A: So much goes into planning the cookout. I started planning in October, that is when the idea about a casino night came up. In December, I started contacting vendors and asking for donations to use a gifts and prizes. Then there was ordering everything for the picnic area including tables, chairs, accessories, and the meat. I am working with about 30 different vendors for donations and helping me organize the event.  I think this year’s cookout is going to be a success.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests?

I pride myself as being a good mother. In my free time, I am with her. I take Mikya to her gymnastic/ballet lessons. On the weekends, we go to church and Sunday school. We also usually visit a friend or go shopping. Whatever it is, we stay on the go. When it gets warm outside we look forward to swimming, playing outdoors, and walking the dog. My daughter is my life and I would like to give her more than I had.

Q: What’s the most exciting thing going on in your life?

I am pregnant! It’s a boy.  He will arrive in June. I can’t wait! I’m so excited!
