May's Contractor of the Month

Shanewells Shane Wells
Since Shane Wells leased on to Mercer in 2003, he has ranked as one of the Top 10 revenue producers every year. When it comes to driving, he is all business, but he doesn't let his dedication and hard work get in the way of having fun. Aside from his reputation as a  professional business man behind the wheel, Wells is notorious for having a laid back, fun-loving attitude. In short, he's just a likeable guy. His recruiter, Gerald Garrison, says, "He's fun to be around ... always cutting up. He's an all-around good guy."

When Wells arrives in Louisville to visit Mercer's offices, he can be spotted wearing a mischievous grin.  Just as he is a skilled truck driver, he is also skilled at dishing out good-natured harrassment. In fact, he may enjoy joking around just as much as he enjoys being the butt of a joke. In only the few years he's been at Mercer, he's become the subject of several funny stories and inside jokes.

One notable example would be how he got his nickname, "Fire Plug." His coordinator, Brian Barnes, recalls, "The first load he pulled, he backed over a fire hydrant in front of a new elementary school. There were parent-teacher conferences going on that day, and the kids and parents were around when it happened. Water was everywhere, and a kid approached Shane and said, 'Mr., why you tear up my new school?" Ever since hearing that story, Brian has dubbed him as Shane "Fire Plug"  Wells.

Despite this calamity, Wells is truly a great asset to Mercer. He stays out on the road for most of the year, only returning home when there is a slow break in freight. Barnes says, "I believe Shane is one of the hardest workers at Mercer. He works almost year round and always has a smile on his face." For this reason, he once again ranked in this year's Top 10.

Is there a secret to his success? "I just do my job," Wells explains. "I just seem to always get good freight. I don't turn down much. The freight is always there and it is easy to work the system. I've built good relationships with my coordinator and the agents, and Mercer gives me the freedom to be my own person and make my own decisions."

This month, Shane and several other Mercer contractors will be honored during the annual Top 10 Weekend. "It means a lot to me that we are invited to an event like this," Shane says. "I love the atmosphere, food, activities and just goofing off. It's a great time!"

We'd like to extend a special congratulations to everyone at Mercer who has contributed to making this company a success. Thank you!
