September's Contractor of the Month
When it comes to helping others, Bob Scott will steer you in the right direction.
Mercer contractor, Bob Scott, is always willing to lend a helping hand. Scott, who is often found hanging around Mercer’s drivers’ lounge, has been leased to Mercer for 14 years. He is a bold, iron-jawed, Southern truck driver, but don’t let his rugged exterior fool you. During his time at Mercer, he’s become a mentor for emerging owner operators, by continually offering advice and performing good ole’ fashioned, random acts of kindness.
Scott has become a well-known personality around the Mercer lot, perhaps more so because he’s eager to broadcast his opinions. Fortunately, his experience, enthusiasm to help others, and true-blue Mercer loyalty has earned him a great deal of credibility and gratitude. “I am a very straight forward person,” Scott admits, “and that’s what I like about Mercer, because they are straight with you.” To those who know him well, Scott’s brutal honesty is a trait of endearment.
Early in his career, Scott took medical leave for a brain tumor that threatened his life. He was touched by the unyielding support he received from the staff and contractors at Mercer. When he recovered, he was welcomed back with open arms. Since then, Scott has pledged loyalty to the company, and he plans to remain “Mercerized.” He now operates a small fleet of his own, and is famed for helping his drivers make the transition into becoming owner-operators. “I’ve been given so much in life, so I don’t mind helping others,” Scott says.
Scott’s generosity does not only extend to his drivers - he’s also been known to help out complete strangers. Recently, at Mercer’s Louisville office, a new contractor was on the verge of being put out-of-service due to a bad set of tires. Scott, who is a local to the area, happened to be on the lot that day. Also, he happened to have a spare set of tires in the back of his pickup truck. He offered the contractor the tires for quite a deal. “Pay me back if you can," Scott said, "but if you can’t … well, that’s OK too.”
