Showusyourtruck.com's May Winners
Mercer announces the winners of their monthly online truck show.
(Louisville, KY) June 4, 2008 —This month’s winners are two cattle haulers-turned flatbedders who have the old school, wild west rigs to prove it. Mercer Transportation’s Brian Fox won in the company’s category for his 1985 Pete 359, “Wyoming Bull.” Robby Smyre from Belfry Montana won in the “Best of the Rest” category with his beautiful candy apple red ’88 Pete, “Circle S.”
Brian Fox’s two-toned forest green and cream Peterbilt was originally used to haul cattle in Torrington, Wyoming. Fox’s path to acquiring this truck is quite a tale – before he purchased “Wyoming Bull,” he had custom-ordered a brand new truck of the same color scheme from the Peterbilt factory. He and his wife had carefully chosen the unique color scheme, and it was to be Fox’s last truck before retiring. Unfortunately, with the new truck came only disappointment and bad luck. After a year of waiting for the truck to be “born,” he found that it was not what he had ordered. He began to look for another truck, this time determined to find an older model, fixer-upper.
His journey for the perfect rig lead him to Torrington, Wyoming where a rancher was selling several old Petes. It was the ugliest blue and white truck he’d ever seen but it ran like a dream. Fox was still unsure and it took another trip out to Wyoming for him to commit. He brought the truck home to Indiana for a complete overhaul and painted it his signature green/cream color scheme. Fox, who spent his early days hauling cattle, pays homage to the truck’s history by naming it the “Wyoming Bull.” Indeed, this bull was rebuilt for the long haul. The 85’ 359 features a 425 CAT engine, 15 speed transmission, 270” wheelbase and 24.5” tires.
Robby Smyre’s red and chrome, 88’ 379 Peterbilt exhibits several old school features, including a painted gas tank, round headlights and skinny chrome stacks. Notably, Smyre is often complimented for the needle-nosed hood, which he personally modified to resemble the hood of 1954 Pete. He shaved 10” off each side of the wide hood to get that coveted vintage look.
“Circle S” is bound to stand out in any landscape. The truck was named after the old Montana cattle company, alluding back to Smyre’s early career hauling cattle out West. Smyre admits that “Circle S” is strictly a work truck. He says, “In 17 years, I’ve put 2.3 million miles on it running over-the-road. It is a fantastic truck and I plan to retire with this one.” Always a work in progress, Smyre looks forward to addding a gangster visor from 4 State Trucks.
