In The Headlights: Angela Phillips

Angela Phillips is the Administrative Assistant for the Safety Department. She is the friendly face that greets everyone at the entrance of Building 8 every day.

Q: What do you love most about working at Mercer?
A: I love the family-oriented atmosphere. Everyone here works together and you really feel like you are a part of something. There are a lot of activities that make you feel like you are family, like the Mercer Cookout.

Q: How long have you worked here at Mercer?
A: 4 ½ years. Before, I used to work in Government Freight. I've been the Administrative Assistant for Safety for about a year and a half.

Q: What is a typical workday like for you?
A: There is a lot of multi-tasking, a lot of responsibilities. First I come in, take care of the mail. There are many physicals, annual reviews, CDL's and citations that need to be updated and I fill out a report for those. I'm responsible for taking care of all the invoices. Also, I take a lot of phone calls throughout the day and I act as a greeter for the orientation classes.

Q: What are you most proud of?
A: I have two boys, one is 6 1/2 (Trevon) and the other is 21 months old (Taleb). They are my pride and joy- the reason I come to work every day.

Q: Two little boys must keep you pretty busy. What is your oldest son like? That age can be quite a handful!
A: Well, he is full of energy. He literally bounces off the walls! Right now he plays tee-ball, flag football and basketball. Eventually, I'd like to have him focus on one sport. He truly is my hero. He doesn't know a stranger and he is so sweet. He tells me things like, "Mamma, you're so beautiful."

Q: So what's a typical weekend like for you?
A: If I'm not relaxing at the house, I'm running around doing errands. Sometimes I feel like a taxi driver- picking people up, dropping them off, visiting family, taking the kids places ... I usually pick one weekend a month to relax and do nothing.

Q: What do you do to relax?
A: Reading. I like to escape into books. I'm a huge Twilight freak. Those books are great! I've read them all twice.

Q: If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: Pizza.

Q: Now that it's spring, do you have any favorite warm-weather activities?
A: I really like being outside. Occasionally, we'll go to Deam's Lake. I enjoy cooking out and swimming.

Q: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
A: I'd like to still be here at Mercer. I love Mercer and my job. And I hope that my boys and I are happy and healthy.

After achieving awards for public speaking, recruiters Colette Walker (right) and Shelby Corum (left) were chosen to speak at last month's Mid-America Cookout.

Hello again from the happiest place on earth. No Bobby Murphy, not a Kenny Rogers concert - MERCERTOWN!!!!

I know that normally I write a letter each month covering trucking topics, or at least Mercer events that are in the works, but this month I'd like to take a little time away from that stuff to brag a little bit on two of Mercer's finest.

Just recently, I had the pleasure of attending the final (graduation) session of the Dale Carnegie course (Effective Communication and Human Relations) at Sullivan College. Two members of the class were none other than Colette Walker and Shelby Corum. Colette and Shelby attended these classes immediately after work every Tuesday for 12 weeks, which equaled about a 14 hour day for them depending on how late they were at class after work.

All members of the class were called upon to give a two-minute report to everyone in attendance (about 50-60 people). I was extremely proud of both of them and the great job they did speaking for so many. Not only did they do a great job with the evening's reports but also, they both received awards for the great job they did during the course. This was all topped off by Shelby receiving the "Highest Achievement" award, which is given to the class member who has shown the most improvement over the 12-week course.

One of the best parts of my job is to see people grow and improve, and I have to say that I have really seen some improvements in these two coworkers; Changes that hopefully will not only help them at Mercer, but in all walks of life and wherever their journeys take them in the future.

I hope everyone out there is doing well and staying safe. See you next month.

Director of Recruiting
