In The Headlights: Janice Miles

Janice Miles is the administrative assistant for our Safety and Compliance Department, as well as the receptionist for Building 8. She's new around here, so make sure you stop by and say hi next time you're in Mercertown!

Q: What is your position at Mercer? How long have you worked here? (What did you do before coming to Mercer?)
A: I took over for Angela Phillips about 1 month ago, in safety & Compliance. Before coming to Mercer, I had worked at Humana Inc. for 3 years, and prior to that, I worked 17 years for a Pediatric group in Medical Towers North.

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in the Okalona Area (Louisville), and have lived my whole life in about a 10 mile radius. I went to St. Athanasius for grades 1-8 and Moore High School, class of '74.

Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go?
A: If I had to pick one place to visit, I guess it would be the Carribean.

Q: What is a typical weekend like for you?
A: There are never enough hours for me in a typical weekend. Of course, there is always laundry and housework, but I love spending time with my family and friends. Lots of ball games with grandkids.

Q: Favorite restaurant in town? What do you like to order there?
A: My favorite restaurant is Olive Garden. I could make a whole meal off their salad and bread sticks, but I always get the lasagna as well.

Q: What are you most proud of?
A: I am most proud of my role as a grandmother. I love all that unconditional love and laughter, and just the way they look at you!!

Q: What do you like most about working at Mercer?
A: I knew from my first interview here that this was where I wanted to get on board. The atmosphere is so pleasant, and I have never met a nicer, more helpful group in my work experience. I like being the first one people see when they enter the safety building, its a real buzz area...never boring!

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: I sing kareoke every week as a hobby of sorts. I have been singing since I was about 4 years old.

Q: Do you have any pets?
A: I have 2 dogs. Mariah is a 13 year old Australian Shepherd, and Petula is almost 2 years old, and she is a Chinese Crested.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: When I was a kid, I always used to tell my grandmother that I wanted to get married, and have 16 kids. Well, I can only say thank God I did not get my second wish, lol.

The Douglas family were nominated for Great American Trucking family of the Year!

Hello once again from sunny Mercertown!

This has been a long hot summer already in Louisville and I thought to myself, "Self, where would be a good place to go and beat this heat? Oh I know, Dallas!!" Turns out that wasn't the best idea in the world; apparently it gets hot in TX. Who knew?

That being said, we had a wonderful time at the truck show in Dallas and had the chance to see some great folks, both with Mercer as well as some other companies (don't worry they'll come around). The truck show was a great time, and I had the opportunity to meet one of the neatest families in trucking who also just happen to be Mercer Contractors - the Douglas family. Be sure to read the article on them in this month's newsletter or in Truckers News.

We were also fortunate enough to have some good folks in our booth raising money for a good cause. I will not name names because they are humble and ask to not be given any extra attention. I would however, like to say thank you for all that you do.

Now don't think that because I mentioned those guys specifically that you all aren't important to me. I appreciate everyone that had lunch with us, went out to dinner with us, or just stopped by to visit with us for a while at the booth. And for all of you out there hauling freight to feed our families that didn't have the time to stop and see us, thank you. I sincerely hope that everyone gets a chance at some point to come to one of our events and feel what pride is involved in being a part of the Mercer family at these shows.

I hope everyone is having a safe summer. Stay cool, rested and keep an eye out for one another out there on the road. Every chance you get, show off that Mercer Pride!

Thank you for all that you do,

Brian Helton
