In The Headlights: Dean Donnell

Dean Donnell has worked at Mercer for 26 years. When Dean first came to Mercer, he worked as a night shift dispatcher. He worked in Permits briefly and has been in Recruiting most of that time thereafter. Dean is now the Orientation Coordinator .
Q: What do you like the most about working at Mercer?
A: It is family oriented and there is a sense of teamwork when the whole company tries to achieve the same goal.
Q: Being the Orientation Coordinator for Mercer, what is a typical day like for you?
A: Chaotic! I help the guys with all situations they face when leasing on.
Q: What are your hobbies/interests?
A: Reading, history, and sailing. Currently, I am on a racing team through the Louisville Cruising Club. We race on the Ohio River every Wednesday. I am on a team of 4 and I'm good! My ultimate sailing goal is to buy a sailboat and sail across the ocean, eventually circling the world.
Q: What is your favorite music?
A: Blues - Buddy guy, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughn are among my favorite artists.
Q: Before you worked at Mercer, what were you doing?
A: I was trying to find the right livelihood for my family. I must have had 20 jobs in the 2 years before I cam to Mercer. I was 22 when I moved from South Dakota with my wife and twins to work at Mercer.
Q: Do you have any advice for the new generation of Mercer?
A: A lot of opportunities will come by to draw your attention from your goals. Try not to get distracted, keep your eye on the goal. A lot of people have a come and gone thinking the grass was greener on the other side, and they've realized they've lost out on something pretty special by leaving.
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: Fried chicken and lots of sweets. >>Read More!

Hello again from Mercertown.
It is August and Mercertown is HOT!! So what better way to cool off than to get out of here? Now where would be a nice place to go visit in August to get away from all of this heat?
OH I KNOW, LET'S GO TO DALLAS!!!!!
That's right The Great American Trucking Show (GATS) is this month, and while I'm sure it's going to be 1000 degrees in Dallas, Mercer will be there in full force. We're sending a big crew down to the show to spread the word about Mercer but also to spend time with our Owner Operators. Over the past few years, the Dallas show has really grown for us in terms of Mercer O/O turnout, and I couldn't be more pleased. It gives me such a feeling of pride to be at the truck shows and see a lonely recruiter from another company (no offense lonely recruiter guy) across the aisle trying to catch a prospective driver passing by while we have a booth full of Mercer Contractors having fun and representing the best company in the business! It's not just a truck show for us - it's kind of like a big family reunion.
So here's a call to action for Mercer Contractors:
Get to Dallas, come hang out with us and let's have some fun!! If you've visited with us over the past few years at GATS, you know that we have a great time hanging out at the booth. We set up our "Mercer Only" area so you guys have a place to post up and rest during the show, and as always, you know that if you hang out with the Team Mercer Recruiting Dept., we won't let you go hungry.
This year our presence at the show should be bigger than ever. You can find Mercer everywhere you go, from contractors making breakfast in the parking lot, to recruiters in the Midnight Trucking Radio Network "Great Texas Welcome" booth, to the 800 sq. ft. booth (#7055) set up to accommodate the best Owner Operators in the business! I really hope that everyone who is in the area will try to come by and help us make Dallas "Mercertown South"!
Until then, be safe and look out for one another.
Brian Helton
Director of Recruiting

Transportation Workers Identification Credential
Ladies and Gentlemen, a very important deadline is approaching. Starting October 15th, 2008, the Transportation Workers identification Credential (TWIC) card will be mandatory at every port.
Mercer has a significant amount of business moving in and out of various ports along both coasts. We move containers from the ports along the west coast. Additionally, Mercer has a large volume of military freight moving both in and out of ports all along both coasts.
In these uncertain economic times, obtaining the TWIC card is the smart thing to do for every owner-operator. This could give you one more loading opportunity when freight is slow. If you are one of our contractors that enjoy moving military freight, Boeing freight and GE freight, to name a few, you should not hesitate and apply for the TWIC card today.
The TWIC card costs $132.50 and is good for FIVE years. If you currently have a valid HazMat endorsement or a FAST Card, the cost of the TWIC card is reduced to $105.25.
Applying for the TWIC card is easy. There are TWIC application facilities in virtually every state and in most major cities. There is probably one close to where you live. Additionally, a TWIC center is located in New Albany, IN, across the river from Mercer's home office.
For more information and answers to most frequently asked questions, visit the TWIC website.
