In The Headlights: Carla Mowrey

After riding along in a Mercer truck for years, Carla Mowrey make the switch to our Driver Qualifications Department. Welcome, Carla!

Q: How did you get involved with Mercer? When did you start working here as an employee?
A: For the last 5 years, I've ridden along in the truck with Doug (Thibault), but last week, on February 22nd, I started as an employee in the Driver Qualifications Department.

Q: Why did you decide to make the switch?
A: I've a very active person, so I'm bored in the truck. It was good to ride along and help Doug with the paperwork. I really miss him and the dogs.

Q: Tell me about your Dogs.
A: We have 2 pugs, Buddy Boy and Baby Girl. They both ride in the truck with Doug. On January 22nd, Baby Girl had a litter of five puppies. All of the puppies are being adopted by mercer contractors and employees. They are great, loving animals.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not truckin' or working?
A: I like to play on the computer. I have a Facebook and Myspace and I like to play games online.

Q: What super power would you most like to have?
A: I'd like to know what people are thinking, but to be able to switch it on and off whenever I want. I wouldn't want to be like Mel Gibson in What Women Want.

Q: What is your favorite band?
A: Right now, I really like Lady Antebellum. I only listen to country.

Q: Are you excited about the truck show coming up?
A: Oh yes, we never miss it. I like it because we get to see everybody we don't get to see normally throughout the year. We all load up in a van and go out to dinner.

Q: What is your favorite thing to cook?
A: I love to cook and it was hard in the truck living without a kitchen. My favorite thing to make is spaghetti with my homemade sauce. It's a family recipe.

Q: What did you want to be when you were a little girl? What do you want to be now?
A: When I was little, I wanted to be the first female jokey. Now I'd like to be a registered CPA.

Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Mercer?
A: My favorite thing is that Mercer is family oriented. Now, seeing Mercer from both perspectives, from in a truck and now behind a desk, that aspect hasn't changed.

Hello all from sunny (not really), warm (not at all) Mercer Town!! I am sending this message out to all of you today in a fantastic mood! Why the great mood, you ask? Because the Mid-America Truck Show is right around the corner!! Mark your calendar for March 25-27.

This is by far the most exciting time of year for us here in the office. We are planning the show, our (free) lunches for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as well as our Contractor Appreciation Cookout Wednesday night (my personal favorite thing about Mid-America week).

All of this take a lot of time, effort and planning, but it is worth it and believe me, this year is going to be loads of fun. As usual, we have plenty of tickets for you guys, so come by recruiting and pick some up before you head over to the show (they are $5 if you get them at the door) and of course, we will provide transportation to and from the show for any of our contractors and customers who want to park here and ride over rather than fight the parking over at the Fair and Expo Center.

We will have our Contractor-only area set up once again at the show so Mercer folks get a place to rest their wary truck show legs and get a birds-eye view of the show. Did I mention the popcorn and soda? The coffee? How about the fire breathing, sword swallowing, bearded lady? OK, OK, I made that last part up, but I promise this: if you come up to the show and hang out with us, you WILL have a good time and probably will bump into some old friends. And maybe, just maybe, you will leave the show with the same feeling I do each year ---

Th trucking business may be difficult, and we've definitely weathered some tough times over the past year, but it's all worth all of the hard work when I get a chance to hang out and have fun with my Mercer Family.

I can't wait to visit with you all. Be careful and get here safely.

Driver Referrals

I would like to send a special thanks to all of our Owner Operators who have sent us referrals over the past few months. We have really seen an increase lately in the number of driver referrals, which shows me that you guys are representing us well out there on the road.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with our driver referral program that we offer to our contractors, this is how it works: If you meet an O/O that you think would be a good fit for our company, tell him to give us a call and get an application. When they fill it out, have them put your name or Unit # on the application and when they lease on, we will pay you $400.00. After they are here for 60 days, we'll give you $200.00 more.

Historically, Mercer Owner Operators have been our best recruiters in the company because you guys know the system, know the freight, and are truly the cream of the crop in the trucking community. Thank you for your help - both in recruiting and in upholding our image of having the most professional Owner Operators in the industry - it is because of you guys we are able to be successful at what we do.

Thanks for everything,

Brian.
