Happy Independence Day from Mercertown!

As we all know, July is the month that we as Americans take a moment to celebrate our independence. But contractors at Mercer also celebrate another kind of independence. The independence that comes with being an owner operator; that special freedom that allows them to choose the freight they will or will not haul. It is the freedom to decide if they want to "keep on trucking" or take some time off to go home and spend time with their families; The freedom to go out there and make their own destiny, without a company trying to tell them what to do or when to do it. Yes, our contractors truly are independent!

Of course, with this independence comes great sacrifice- although they may go home at any time they choose, or turn down any load they wish, most contractors find it necessary to keep moving that truck to make it in today's economic conditions. Always looking for a way to earn a little more, always showing tremendous dedication, our contractors have done an exceptional job of staying afloat when so many in the industry are calling it quits. It is this determination and professionalism that allows Mercer to provide exceptional service to our customer base in a time where many companies are shutting the doors. These are the same qualities that make them the best group of owner operators in the world, and I am proud to travel this great country and say that I am associated with them.

June was a wonderful month at Mercer. Our fabulous owner operators worked hard, sacrificed much and provided an all-time record month for our company. I thank each and every one of you that make the success of our company possible, and my family thanks you for making dinner and a roof over our heads possible. I know that you are independent and could go to any company you choose, and I thank you for choosing to do it here at Mercertown. Please stay safe and look out for one another on the road.

Happy Independence Day,

Brian Helton
Director of Recruiting

Attention Kentucky CDL Holders:

If you have a Kentucky Commercial Driver License, you MUST fill out a new "Commercial Driver License Application" and send it to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in the suspension of your Kentucky CDL. Basically, the form requires you to list all of the CDL's you have held for the past ten years. All states are supposed to be keeping these records, but apparently Kentucky was not. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration discovered that fact during an audit and has required Kentucky to comply.

For your convenience, you can download the form. It is not important that you are able to list the license number of past CDL's from other states, but it IS important that you list the fact that you had other CDL's. If you have any questions, do not call Mercer, call Judy Wolf at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet: 502-564-6800, Ext. 4175. It is important for all Kentucky CDL holders to send in the completed form as soon as possible.

Potential Delays on I-81

Interstate 81 Improvements to Begin July 21 in PA

Allentown - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that work will start July 21 to improve Interstate 81 between Exit 119 (Highridge Park Road) and Exit 107 (US 209) in Schuylkill County.

The Improvements to I-81 include concrete patching, shoulder reconstruction, milling and resurfacing the highway, new line paint and new reflective pavement markings.

Beginning July 21, motorists can expect 24-hour single lane conditions on I-81 north and south. There will be no lane restrictions during holiday weekends.

This project is expected to be complete in November 2008. All schedules are weather dependent.

Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra time when traveling through the area or seek alternative routes.

Pennsy Supply, Inc. of Harrisburg, PA. is the general contractor on the $11.36 million project.

The average daily traffic volume on this stretch of I-81 is 28,595 vehicles.

PennDOT reminds drivers to move through all work zones with caution, obey posted speed limits and to always buckle up. For more information on roadway construction and maintenance operations, visit PennDOT's website at www.dot.state.pa.us.

Mercer Owner Operators: Please be aware of potential delays and plan accordingly!
