In The Headlights: Brian Helton

Recruiting Director, Brian Helton is "in the headlights" this month, and boy is he excited about it. When I ask Brian if he would answer some questions, he replied, "I am totally stoked about this! Just don't be "half steppin'" with the questions. Come up with some really earth shattering, hard hitting stuff." With this demand, I decided to ask Brain's recruiters and fellow colleagues for some advice with the questions. This is what we came up with.
Q: What do you like the most about working at Mercer?
A: The people I work with. My staff.
Q: What are your hobbies/interests?
A: Playing music & yoga.
Q: What kind of music do you like? Favorite band/artist?
A: Everything from Bluegrass, to blues, to rock. I don't have a favorite band. There are too many good ones. Currently I am into The Black Keys.
Q: If you were a cartoon character who would you be? Why?
A: Charlie Brown, that way I wouldn't have to change my hair.
Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?
A: Raising Liam (Brian's son).
Q: Inquiring minds would like to know - what is your favorite color/flavor jellybean? Why?
A: Cotton Candy Jelly Bellies are my favorite because you get the flavor without getting "all that crap" all over your face and hands.
Q: Other inquiring minds want to know - how do you maintain that girlish figure of yours and what product do you use on your hair to keep it so soft?
A: I have 40 different shampoos. I pick by smell of which to use. What hair?

Truck Parade at Wheel Jam 2008 - Huron, South Dakota
"Go west my son, and grow up with the country!"
Well, that's just what we're going to do. June is here and that means two things; the heat index in Mercertown will soon reach 1,000 degrees (Celsius), and it's time for the recruiting department to go West. The first stop in June is up to South Dakota for Wheel Jam 2008, then we'll be heading to the Great West Truck Show in Las Vegas. Be sure to check our events section for dates.
Mercer Owner Operators, if you should find yourself in the Las Vegas area, be sure to come visit us at the Mercer booth (you know there's a lunch in it for ya!) and say hello. We always look forward to seeing "our guys" when we're out on the road, so look us up if you can.
Now that the fun stuff is out of the way, lets remember that with summer comes the heat and humidity. Lets face it - all of you guys out there have a really tough career. Be sure that you are taking good care of yourself when you're out loading, unloading, and securing that freight. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
* Sunscreen isn't just something out there for sissies. It is proven to help prevent cancer caused by harmful UV rays. And remember, you need to reapply if you are out there sweating for and extended period.
* Be sure to drink plenty of water. You are going to sweat a lot this summer (unless you're Bobby Murphy), and you need to keep your body hydrated.
* You should wear baggy clothing and a hat, (preferably a Mercer hat). If you are a Mercer contractor and you don't have a hat, stop in and see us and we'll get you one.
* Lastly, take a break. I know that the clock is ticking and you need to get down the road, but if you are out working in the heat you need to take frequent breaks for shade and water. Most people who suffer from heat related illness or injury don't "feel hot" until it is already too late. So please, don't wait until you feel bad to take a short rest.
Well, that is about it for this month so until next time - take care of yourselves, and thanks to you all.
Brian Helton
Director of Recruiting
