In The Headlights:
Mark Witton

This month, Mark Witton is the lucky Mercer employee singled out to appear In The Headlights. Mark is currently helping out as the Trailer Lease Administrator.
Q: What is your position at mercer? How long have you worked here? What did you do before?
A: I came to Mercer as a Truck Coordinator. I worked there for two years. I then worked in the Brokerage Leads program, along with Brokerage Relations. Recently I moved to the Contractor Relations Advocate position. Being there for only a couple of weeks, I was asked to help out as the Trailer Lease Administrator. That position was vacant and needed someone. Before I was at Mercer, I sold Automotive Information and Point of Sale Systems.
Q: What are your hobbies/interests? What do you do for fun?
A: I am a musician. I play bass in a band called Reminisce. We do oldies, country, blues and top 40. I also play in a progressive jazz / fusion band called Bandwidth. We do mostly original songs with a few tunes from The Yellowjackets, Spiro Gyra, Rippingtons, etc.. I also play Christian music in church and with some of the local Christian organizations.
Q: Whom do you admire most and why?
A: I admire Jesus Christ. Whether you are Christian or not, Christ died for everyone, willfully gave His life so that everyone's sins will be forgiven. He did all that whether you accept Him or not. "That is the ultimate hookup!"
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Highview, a suburb south of Louisville.
Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go?
A: I would love to go to Alaska, especially during peak activity of the Northern Lights.
Q: What is a typical weekend like for you?
A: I work Saturday at a friend's Auto Shop. Sunday, I go to Church and out to eat afterwards. There are naps in there as well ;-)
Q: Favorite restaurant in town? What do you like to order there?
A: Vincenzo's Italian Restaurant... I love the Italian Crepes
Q: What are you most proud of?
A: My Girls, I have four Daughters
Q: If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
A: Wile E. Coyote. I can set a great trap, but never catch anything
Q: What do you like most about working at Mercer?
A: The People! You can't find better people than the people that work here!

Hello again everyone!
I hope this letter finds all of you out there in good health and good spirits because freight is booming!! It has been for a while but we can officially say that there is more freight in our system than you can shake a stick at. Why you would shake a stick at freight, I have no idea, but there is a bunch of it out there to haul.
With lots of freight comes lots of hard work, and if this spring is any indication of the summer to come, the hard work is going to be done in some really hot weather! That being said, here are a few things to think about. Yes, we do need that load delivered, and yes we need to take care of that customer, but not at the price of your health so remember to be careful when securing that load and PACE YOURSELF! If you have been in the sun for 30 minutes wrestling a tarp, take a break and cool off for a few minutes and have a glass (8 oz) of water. You should have some cool water at least every 30 minutes that you are out in the sun. Wear loose fitting cotton clothing that will soak up the sweat, as your clothes absorb the sweat, it will cool and in turn, help keep you cool. Most of all, know the signs of heat exhaustion; headache, fatigue, nausea, feeling dizzy, and sweating more than normal are all signs that you are too hot! If you experience these symptoms, call for help and get yourself out of the heat ASAP.
REMEMBER, your health and well being is more important than any load of freight.
OK, now for the fun stuff. We have quite a few events coming up that we would love to see you guys show up for, so please check out the news and events section of the website and try to join us at any of the shows that you can. I hope to get to spend some time with you guys out there on the road, and maybe share a good dinner together as well.
Until next time, please keep an eye out for one another on the road and at the shippers when loading and unloading. And thanks, without you guys, none of this would be possible.
