In The Headlights: Sandra Brown

Sandra Brown is featured this month in the headlights. Among the usual important Sandra facts, she reveals her nickname around Mercer (the queen of what?).
Q: What do you like about Mercer?
A: The clothing we get to wear to work. I also like the friendly people I am surrounded by. Including my colleagues and contractors.
Q: What is your job title and description?
A: I am the Safety & Compliance Drug Testing Administrator. A.K.A. The Pee
Queen. I am responsible for random drug testing. Including contacting the driver to tell him he's due for a drug test and finding an available facility within a reasonable distance from the driver. I find the locations by looking in my "Location Bible." I also handle all of the pre-employment drug testing paperwork. The other part of my job is to give out Safety Awards and Years of Service jackets.
Q: What are your hobbies/interests?
A: I like working in my flower garden. Sitting on the front porch when it is quiet is very relaxing. I also love playing with my grandchildren. I have 4 grandchildren that live in Kentucky and 7 more that live in Illinois.
Q: Where were you born and raised?
A: I was born and raised in Louisville, KY. I have lived in Texas, Kansas, and Mississippi.
Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?
A: Marriage is a great accomplishment. Also I am a breast cancer survivor. That is a great accomplishment.

Shelby Corum, Brian Helton and the winners of the Hawthorn Picnic slingshot contest; Chris Leak, Tim Gunter and Mike Parks.
Hello from Mercertown!
I hope everyone is well out there on the road. I just returned from our annual Hawthorne picnic for our owner operators in Arkadelphia, AR and I must say it did me a lot of good. We had the best turnout ever this year, so I got to spend lots of time talking to our contractors and here's what makes me love being at Mercer:
* We are all watching the stock market go south.
* Freight in the industry isn't as strong as any of us would like to see it. (Is it ever?)
* Fuel cost has decreased, but is still way too high.
* And on top of that, it rained all day Saturday.
We had all of these things going on that we could have sat around and griped about for a weekend but nobody did. Everyone that I spoke with was upbeat and enjoying themselves. Sure, there was talk of things that we could all do better and things that could be improved within the fleet, but there were constructive criticisms and productive conversations taking place between people who share a common love for the place we work and the people that we work with. Thanks to everyone who showed up and made it a great weekend. Also, thanks to the Hawthorne family for having us, and all of the great work they do for us down there.
Looking ahead, we have a few driver appreciation events coming up in the southeast this fall. Be sure and check the News and Events Calendar for dates and locations. These are always fun events to attend. We hope you'll stop by if you're in the area and let us buy you lunch!
Well, that's all for now. We've got to get back to work around here planning for next year and all of the great events to come. Until next month, stay safe out there on the road and thanks for all that you do!
