In The Headlights: Len Dunman

This month, Len Dunman, Mercer's Director of Safety, is being featured "in the headlights". The moment Len heard he was going to be September's featured employee, he was eager to answer our questions. Len is pictured above holding his granddaughter, Sophie.
Q: Len, how long have you worked at Mercer and in what departments?
A: I have been working at Mercer for 26 years. I started in Claims and worked there for 5 years. Then I started the Recruiting Department and ran it for 6 years. At the same time, I also ran the Facility Department for 14 years. I have been the Safety Director for 6 years.
Q: What do you like the most about Mercer?
A: I have enjoyed watching Mercer grow. I have handled the real estate and drawn up the blueprints for all of the buildings at Mercer. Also I know most of the drivers. I have kept too busy to go anywhere else.
Q: Before you came to Mercer, what were you doing?
A: I was a Project Manager for a construction company. The company was going broke and I had 3 young children to support so I came to Mercer.

Brian, Dennis and Heidi at last month's Great American Truck Show in Dallas
Hello everyone, and greetings from Mercertown.
Well, August is behind us already and what a month it was! We had a wonderful time at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas and the show was a huge success. We had lots of fun in the booth with the inaugural run of the Mercertown Prize Wheel, and I have to say that it was my favorite part of the show. Not only did we make some people happy by giving away some cool prizes, but I think a lot of people left with smiles on their faces, just from being around the fun (and silliness). I would like to thank all of our owner operators who showed up to hang out at the booth and join us for dinner after the show. I especially want to thank those of you who stayed after it was all over to help us with the tear down of the booth. Also, thanks to our friends at the Midnight Trucking Radio Network for their support at the show, as well as Randall Reilly Publishing for being a great host. You guys are the best.
Most of all, I want to thank two of my favorite people here at Mercer for the Cotton Candy Jelly Belly's (my favorite) and all of the other wonderful things you do around here that make Mercer such a special place to work; I know that you are modest, so I wont embarrass you by putting your name in here, but you know who you are and I love you guys.
Dallas is the last big show of the year, so we have a little time to regroup and start looking ahead to our Driver Appreciation events that we do down south every fall. Check out the Events Calendar on Mercertown.com for the dates. We'd love to see you there. Driver appreciations are a great opportunity for us to get out there in the truck stops, buy some lunches and thank the truck drivers for all of their hard work - whether you're at Mercer or somewhere else, we appreciate what you do to help keep our industry going.
Speaking of appreciation, the annual Hawthorne Picnic is coming up the first weekend of October!!! This is a very fun weekend for Mercer contractors, and if you haven't made plans to attend, you should seriously consider it! All you have to do is give Laura a call in recruiting, put your name on the list and show up. We'll take care of the rest.
Well, that's all for now. Until next month, be careful out there and let us know if you need anything.
Thank you for all you do,
Brian Helton
Director of Recruiting

Federal Highway use Tax
The deadline for paying your 2008/2009 Federal Highway Use tax was August 31, 2008. Please send a copy of your IRS stamped receipt to the Permit and License Department as soon as possible. We need a copy to renew your license plate next March.
If you prefer to scan your receipt, you can email it to bbowling@mercer-trans.com.
TCH CARD Now Accepted at T/A and Petro
The Travel centers of America (T/A) and Petro Travel Centers began accepting the TCH card. TCH will process the T/A point of sale discount of 6.5 cents per gallon at T/A owned facilities, just like the ComData card. Petro will also rebate TCH gallons to the Mercer fuel rebate program at the rate of 3.5 cents per gallon.
The TCH card is now accepted at over 4,000 locations throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. TCH is also acceptable at all major truck stop chains except Pilot and Love's.
Fuel Rebates Update
Listed below are truck stops that now offer fuel rebates to Mercer Contractors:

* Mercer no longer needs fuel receipts purchased with the ComData or TCH card. If you purchase your fuel with cash, a personal credit card, a personal check or anything other than the Mercer issued ComData and TCH card then Mercer still needs the original fuel ticket. Please remember to send your fuel receipts in with your logs.
